WINDOWS
My paintings emerge from the wall in a constructive way. They are windows connecting the physical world to the nonphysical. I aim to create a non 2d image to pursue a reaction with my viewer, sharp angles and hidden spaces are found on the way the shaped canvas unfolds in front of her. I want her to approach and touch, to live with them and not just to observe them, to become part of the space she occupies in the world. Inside and outside are the same. My work is a created space within the wall.
VISIONS
Visions is imagined as a group of paintings, in which I observe how people approach the same situation or event in different ways. These images came from pictures I took of the same window at different times indifferent angles. I edited each photograph by hand and maintained the frame as a common element across all the paintings. I created a composition based on light reflections and contrasts inside the window. For me angles, forms, and how we react to the repetition of subject matter is what I am most interested in exploring.
CONTRASTS
Contrasts emerges from found images of architectural spaces. These images are redrawn to create new areas that will challenge anyone to enter and transit through them. Giving my viewer two possibilities in every painting with high contrasts and sharp turns. Duality of decisions in where to inhabit is my main interest.
JUST LIFE
A glimpse, something you see in 15 seconds. Life has become a glimpse of everything. You can catch just the essence of an object, a place, a sensation in just that minuscule section of your observation.
Just life is about those quick impressions where I can hold on to a part of that instant in my daily life.
OBSERVATION
I create images of architectural spaces which are both inviting and physically impossible. These images are imagined from photographs I have taken or received from friends. I edit the photographs by hand, reducing them down to their main structures, intentionally breaking the rules of the real architectural spaces they represent.
The geometric forms in my paintings cross over each other, double back, and make unexpected and inviting entrances to somewhere. The paintings unfold in layers, which I imagine the viewer entering, step by step, finding pleasure in the conundrum behind the windows. In the end, perhaps she doesn't realize quite how deep inside the painting she has gone.
Veronica Ibargüengoitia works in oil on canvas in different formats, creating images of architectural spaces. Her large-format paintings unfold in layers, which she imagines the viewer entering, step by step, finding pleasure in the conundrum behind each geometric form. Ibargüengoitia is currently in the Block Program of the Glassell School of Arts at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). She is finishing her Certificate in Sculpture at the MFAH, and recently completed her Certificate in Painting at the MFAH. She has studied with many artists in different disciplines in the U.S. and in Mexico, and her work has been shown in national and international juried shows. She is a member of the Visual Arts Alliance, Houston Arts Alliance and Sociedad Mexicana de Autores de las Artistas Plasticas, Mexico. She holds a BA in Industrial Design from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. Born in Mexico City, she lives in Houston, Texas.
